查经程序 A Bible Study Procedure

There are many books on "Bible Study Methods". If this is new to you, you can find lots of materials online.

I am sharing my study habit with you. Hope that you can have a clear picture of what to do. For those who are experienced learners of the Bible, I hope my sharing will stimulate you to share your own thoughts too.

Procedure:

1. Attitude: when you begin to do Bible study, first of all, make sure that your attitude is acceptable to the one living God who spoke to the prophets (including those who wrote the books in the Bible).  The Bible is the Word of God. If you do not come with a mindset to know God and his will, doing a technical analysis of the text is only an academic exercise.

2. Read the Bible text in your mother tongue and in the languages that you can handle, e.g. English, Chinese, or French....etc.  Read it 3-5 times until you are familiar with the text.

3. Read the interlinear, and compare the literal/raw translation with the published Bible versions.

4. Expand your read from a small passage to the entire chapter, then to contextual block of chapters (e.g. Rom 9-11), then to the entire book.

5. Observe the textual details:

a. Notice the parts of speech, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions... etc

b. Notice the tense, voice and mood (TVM). Notice also any hint to the mood & atmosphere of the passage.

c. Pay special attention to the verbs, thereby indicating the action being taken, who is doing what, etc

d. Nouns are important too, Note the main subject,, together with the main predicate (the verb) form the main clause.

e. Notice also the key persons, places, time, and events.  I prefer to use colored pencils to highlight all keywords.

f. For unfamiliar terms, use a language dictionary, then a Bible dictionary.

g. Look for repeated words, synonyms, antonyms, contrast, idioms, and parabolic statements,

6. Do a simple word block Sentence Diagram to indicate the relationship of the different parts within the sentence. Do the whole passage, and the entire chapter if necessary. The attention is focused on the thought flow.

7. Establish the keyword, key phrase, key verse.

8. Ask questions: 5W+1H

9. Start searching for answers. Continue to ask questions and find answers.

10. Summarize your reading with the keywords (from the text itself) and rephrase the theme in a short title.

Applications:

  • Changes: what you should do in applying the Bible lesson in real life:
  • Illustration: an aid to capture the lesson in a nutshell
  • Build a bullet list of the main thoughts and the progression of thoughts
  • Memorize
  • Pray and meditate.  Pray, pray, pray.

Life is distorted when you do not know God

You can know God in truth from the Bible (the Word of God).

Without the Word of God, it is difficult to truly know God.
