In the first part of the journey, Paul visited the cities he had visited on his first missionary journey, Derbe and Lystra, and passed through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia.
Where can they go next?
As he and his small team moved on, they were "prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia" (Acts 16:6),
They turned north, and "they attempted to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them." (Acts 16:7)
Spiritual Lessons:
- It's not a matter of pointing at a random spot or choosing a picturesque spot from a nicely printed guide.
- It's not about fulfilling your dreams and plans, much less proving yourself.
- In our spiritual life, especially in doing God's work, we must all learn to be guided by the Spirit of God.
- Even if you have a specific goal, learn to focus on the Spirit of God.
- The Spirit of God may say "NO" to all/or any of your plans.
- Don't think that since you want to serve God, everything has to go according to your plan and intent.
- Learn to pray and learn to accept a "NO" from God as an answer.
- Accept God's "NO" wholeheartedly.
- No matter how good the prospects/prospects are for you, don't go against the will of God.
- Choose to follow God's leading, no matter how difficult it is for you
- Adjust your plans according to God's instructions.
- Continue to pay attention to God's leading
A Popular Saying
A popular saying goes: "When God closes one door, he must open another window elsewhere."
Helen Keller said, "When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but so often we look at that closed door so that we cannot see the one that is open for us."( https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-origin-of-the-quote-When-God-closes-a-door-He-opens-a-window)
As we can see from Acts 16, God didn't just open a small window, in fact, He opened a gate in Troas so that Paul could venture into Macedonia.
When we look at the map, we can easily see the scene,
The team came from the southeast and went west.
They are blocked west (Asia) and north (Bithynia).
What are the options?
- Should they stay where God stops them?
- Should they be heading in different directions? Where can they go?
- Should they withdraw Galatia?
They can only go northwest.
So they came to the end, to the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, to a city called Troas.
