01 圣经书卷单词搜索 - 何西亚书 Bible Books Word Search - Hosea - Excel Spreadsheet for Download

In this new series of Bible Book Word Search, I would like to help all our readers to search out all words of each book of the Bible, so that we can study the Word of God with clarity and accuracy.

One of the first things we need to do is to search out all the words that occur in the book.

In the coming days, we will systematically search out all the words that occur in each Book of the Bible.

The Method:

1.  All the data will be collected from the YahwehDeHua Website
2.  The final format will be put in an Excel format
3.  An Excel document will be provided for our readers to download at the end of each blog
4.  From there, you can start doing in-depth word studies to find the keywords and key themes of the Book.

Twelve Minor Prophet Books

We will begin with the 12 minor prophet books in the following order:

1. Hosea
2. Joel
3. Amos
4. Obadiah
5. Jonah
6. Micah
7. Nahum
8. Habakkuk
9. Zephaniah
10. Haggai
11. Zechariah
12. Malachi

BOOK OF HOSEA

To do word studies of each book:

Part A:  Collect individual words from the book

Part B Collect word families of the book    (Some individual words are grouped together in family groups)

Part A:  Individual Words of the Book of Hosea

Collect Data from YahwehDeHua Website

Step 1:    Go to: http://yahwehdehua.net/cn/snstats/ot

Step 2:    Choose the book:  Hosea

Hosea has 14 chapters:  From Hosea 1:1 to Hosea 14:9

Step 3:    Scroll to the bottom of the page:

Hosea

1.  Hit "All Hebrew Numbers"

2.  Hit "Submit an enquiry"

Step 4:    The data will appear on this page

Hosea

This page is very long, so I show you only part of the page from the top.

1.  All the words are listed in the order of Strong's Numbers of Hebrew words

2.  If you look closely at the data even in these few words, you can see that the word "love" which is a theme of Hosea occurs 16 times.

Hosea

The table also shows you how the word "love" is spread through the 14 chapters of Hosea.
- the most occurrence of "love" is 5 times in Hosea Chapter 1.
- or we can group them together that "love" occurs from Hosea 1-3 and Hosea 9-13
etc.

This gives you an idea of where the keywords are located and in which chapter or sections inside the book.

Step 5:  Export to Spreasheet

Hosea

Click to "Export the spreadsheet": Excel format:

Voila!

Hosea

I will attach the Excel Spreadsheet for you to download onto your computer.

Once you have the Excel spreadsheet, you can do anything you want to find the information you want in terms of word frequencies, word occurrences of each chapter, the spread of the word in the book, the theme of each chapter, and the theme of the book.

Of course, word studies is only a start in exegesis. Context is most important when it comes to looking for themes in the book. You need to find not only individual words but how the words are used in the context of the chapter, the section, and the entire book.

Learn to look for "Key Phrases".  The Key phrases will direct you to the theme of the Book.  For Key phrases, you need to read the entire book at one sitting to grasp the whole context.  What I do is that in the next 14 days, I read the entire book once each day in prayer to absorb the message that God wants to speak to me.

Here are the 50 most frequent words of Hosea:

The larger the word, the higher the frequency:

- YHWH   -  46X
- Israel      -  44X
- Ephraim  - 37X
- God         - 26X

Looking at the words will give you an idea of some of the themes in the book.

Of all the prophets in the OT, Hosea pays special attention to Ephraim:

Hope you have enjoyed today's blog.

Feel free to give me your feedback,
Rosa

PS  I will do Part B in the next post and take you step by step!

TheWord 圣经注释模块 TheWord Commentaries Modules

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (JFB) 对整本圣经进行评论和解释。
  • Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible 整本圣经的简明注释(MHCC
  • Word Pictures in the New Testament 新约希腊文解经(词字解说)(RWP
  • Word Studies in the New Testament 新约词汇研究(VWS

谨慎地说,当我们使用注释时,请小心留意:注释都是从作者的角度出发的。

我们每个人都有从学习、经验和背景所塑造出来的神学理解。

除了圣经之外,没有绝对的方案可以衡量它的正确与否。因此,注释不应该作为快速的答案来源,而是作为放大镜让你查考圣经的含义。

查经工具:TheWord > 免费词典 Tool for Bible Studying: TheWord > Free Dictionaries

 TheWord 應用程序有 2 個類別,付費模塊和免費模塊。 兩者都有相當多的聖經詞典供您選擇。 我會為你推薦以下內容:

付费模块受版权保护,通常是较新的作品,例如:

  • Legacy Standard Bible with Strong's Numbers & LSB Heb Gk Dictionary (LSBHGD) 售价 24.95 美元
  • Kittel 的 10 卷新约神学词典 (TDNT),售价 200 美元,
  • 删节 Kittel 的单卷 (TDNTa),售价 23.96 美元。
  • 旧约神学词典,第 1 至 17 卷 (TDOT),售价 749.00 美元
  • 旧约神学词汇书 (TWOT),现价 27.96 美元

LSB

New Tool: CUV with Stong's Number

YahwehDeHua.net 提供的 CUV-YHWH 版

请容我借此机会感谢 YahwehDeHua.net 背后的许多人。

Chinese Bible CUV

As for the Chinese Bibles on the TheWord web, especially those with Strong's Number, there is no record of who wrote/edited them nor who put them online.

If the data is correct, then it's not a big problem.

However, if you try to do a simple word search or word study using Strong's Number, you'll quickly get frustrated and find that the effort was in vain.

  • Those Strong's Numbers seem to have been taken from the KJV. Since KJV is based on TR and CUV is based on WH (Critical Text), the Greek texts are not the same. Needless to say, the differences are there.
  • The editor may not be Chinese, and some of the original text numbers do not align to the Chinese words.
  • The original text numbers provided are not exhaustive, and there are many missing ones.

Although a good attempt to provide more resources, the intent is good, but the usability is not strong due to too many bugs and bugs. You cannot rely on this tool for any word learning.

New Resource: CUV-YHWH

Therefore, I strongly recommend you to use the CUV-YHWH edition provided by www.YahwehDeHua.net,

  • The original text numbering in it is manually checked for alignment sentence by sentence according to WH and LC.
  • The name of God (YHWH) has been updated as "Yahweh" and matches every use in the Hebrew Bible.
  • The text has Strong's number and includes Tense Voice and Mood (TVM), which provides more information about the biblical analysis of the verbs.
  • It's completely free (you don't even need an email to download)
  • The CUV-YHWH version is currently only available in Simplified Chinese. This work is still under revision.
  • A Traditional Chinese version may be available at a later date.

Acknowledgment

Allow me to take this opportunity to thank the many people behind YahwehDeHua.net.

They contributed to the work over the years, and in the end, they humbly declined to mention their names. Many of them are proofreaders who review every Strong's Number, and CUV text, down to a single punctuation mark, seeking perfection. There is also a smaller technical team that does all computer programming, web and mobile application work, and further development.

May all glory be to God, who freely gives us life through his word.

If you downloaded TheWord / Mysword module and found it useful, please recommend it to your friends. Let them also have useful Bible study tools, so that they can better understand the word of God.

工具:圣经应用程序 Tools: Bible App

当您打开 TheWord 网站时,您应该做的第一件事就是下载应用程序。

它已经打包了一些模块,然后您可以继续下载你想加装的模块。这些模块列在“模块”页面上,以"类别"排列(您也可以从应用程序中,访问该页面,顶部菜单>“添加标题”:

圣经 |土著圣经 |字典 |评论书籍 |灵修 |图形 |»更多...

Bibles |Indigenous Bibles |Dictionaries |CommentariesBooks |Devotionals |Graphics |»more...

让我们从"圣经"开始。

许多免费圣经太旧了,比如 Darby (1890)、Geneva (1587)、Smith, Tyndale (1526)……除非你喜欢研究圣经翻译的发展,否则这些"古董"可能对您查经没有多大用处。

但是我想推荐一些不错的近作供您下载

  • Apostolic Bible Polyglot Greek-English Interlinear [一本有用的希腊遂字对圣经,使用 LXX 作为其 OT,这是一个独特的工具,因为 Strong's Number 可以用作 LXX-OT 和 NT 之间的桥梁,如果你想进行全面的希腊单词研究,这是必须下载的]
  • English Reversed Version  [此为我和合本翻译的英文基础文本,仅对中文用家有参考价值]
  • English Septuagint (Brenton's) [这是 LXX 的英文译本,使徒们引用的希腊旧约圣经,以及对旧约研究提供很好的参考]
  • Net Bible - 较新的英文翻译 [虽然免费版的注释有限,但它仍然是一个有用的现代翻译]
  • Lexham English Bible [这是我最喜欢的圣经之一,由 Logos Bible Software 制作]
  • Holman Christian Standard Bible [另一个现代翻译,一本究读圣经]
  • Jewish Publication Society - 1917 [稍老,但从犹太人的角度翻译]
  • World English Bible [一个免费编辑的版本,您可以自由修改,以成为您自己个人的圣经版本]
------------

When you open the TheWord web, the first thing you should do is to download the app program. it contains a few modules already, then you can continue to download modules that you want to install. The modules are listed under different categories on the "modules" page (you can also access the page from within the app, top menu > "Add Titles":

Bibles |Indigenous Bibles |Dictionaries |CommentariesBooks |Devotionals |Graphics |»more...

Let's begin with the BIBLES.

More of the free Bibles are old ones, like Darby (1890), Geneva (1587), Smith, Tyndale (1526)... unless you are fond of the development of Bible translations, otherwise, these may not have much use to further your studies.

But there are a few more recent productions that I would like to  recommend for you to download:
  • Apostolic Bible Polyglot Greek-English Interlinear  [a useful Greek Interlinear Bible, using LXX for its OT, This is a unique tool as the Strong's Number can be used as a bridge between LXX-OT & NT, this is a MUST if you want to do throughout Greek Word Study]
  • English Revised Version  [this is the English base text for the translation of the Chinese Union Version, useful only for Chinese users as a reference, ]
  • English Septuagint (Brenton's) [this is an English translation of the LXX, a Greek Old Testament that the Apostles quoted from, and a good reference for OT studies]
  • Net Bible - New English Translation [though the free edition is with limited notes, it is still a modern translation that could be useful]
  • Lexham English Bible [this is one of my favorite Bibles, it is produced by the Logos Bible Software]
  • Holman Christian Standard Bible [ another modern translation, a study Bible]
  • Jewish Publication Society - 1917 [slightly older, but in public domain, with a translation from a Jewish point of view]
  • World English Bible [in public domain, a free-to-edit version that you can freely modify to obtain a Bible version of your own translation]

读圣经的工具 Tools to Understand the Bible

How to Translate the Word "God"?

What caught my attention is that the Christian church can't agree on how to translate the word God.

אֱלֹהִים (Elohim) in the Old Testament, θεός (Theos) in the New Testament

  • The Hebrew word Elohim is used 2598 times in the Old Testament
  • The Greek word Theos is used 1327 times in the New Testament

God

Matteo Ricci used the term "上帝" to refer to the Catholic gods, thinking that the meanings were quite similar. This approach aroused opposition from some Confucian scholars. They believe that there is an essential difference between the Confucian Heaven and the Catholic God.

Matteo Ricci's method not only aroused the opposition of the Confucian scholars at that time, but also caused the dissatisfaction of other missionaries such as the Dominican Church and the Holy See. In 1715, Pope Clement XI issued a papal decree, prohibiting Chinese Catholics from offering sacrifices to heaven, Confucianism, and ancestors, and from now on, the word "天" and "上帝" are not allowed to be used. In the word, only the word "天主" is used, and the "Lord of all things in the world" is called "天主".

The Catholic Church is governed by the Vatican and the Pope, who coined the word "天主" to translate the word "God". This is now the standard for all Chinese Catholic churches. Once you hear this word, you can be sure that you are dealing with Catholicism.

But for Christianity, there is no hierarchy among the churches. Because no one has absolute authority. Churches cannot agree on translations, and each has its own point of view. But they all agreed on one thing: not the Catholic way.

Because China is generally a pagan nation with local traditional religions. There are different gods, and god is such a general term that it means different gods to different people. People in general don't really care who God is. Some Christian groups tend to avoid the word "神" lest people confuse pagan concepts with the only true God in the Bible.

God

So some people choose "上帝" because it's a term with a traditional background. As we all know, there is a Temple of Heaven in Beijing, there is no Buddha statue in it, only a plaque with the words "Emperor, God(皇天上帝)" written on it.

In Chinese cultural beliefs, God is the supreme deity worshipped by the Chinese monarch (the Son of Heaven). Belief in God originated from the worship of the sky (i.e. the North Star) in ancient China. No one is more respected than the emperor, he is entrusted by the sky, so the sky must be a god. For the ancients, God was heaven, and heaven was God,

The word 上帝 has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, the general public is now accustomed to the wording and can directly associate the biblical "God" = "God of the West". God and Buddha were taken as on the same level.

However, in our modern minds, the word "上帝(God)" with the word "帝(emperor)" is an old-fashioned concept of imperialism, which leaves a bad taste in the minds of many people. Therefore, they may prefer a simple literal translation of God as 神.

CUV is "Union" but not United

In the 19th century, British missionaries generally tended to use "上帝", while American missionaries tended to use "神".

The debate did not come to a conclusion, and to this day, the Chinese Bibles are printed in two versions: the "上帝" version and the "神" version.

If we take a step back and rethink the whole matter with the Bible as the focus, the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks and Romans in the Bible, and all the civilizations around the Israelites, were polytheistic peoples, but the Bible do not shy away from using the word God to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.

Why can't we just take precedence from the Bible?

3.2 空一格 Blank Spacing in Chinese Bible

How did the practice of adding spaces catch on?

In the past, when writing "President", "President", "President Chiang" or "Chiang Kai-shek" in Taiwan, it was necessary to leave a space to show respect.

But we know that in China's 5,000-year history, there is no written Chinese style of leaving blank spacing to express respect.

In ancient times, in order to show respect for elders and important people, when he was mentioned, he would be written separately, and his name and salutation would be placed at the top of the other line.

So, how did the "empty one" come about?

It turned out that Chiang Kai-shek, as a Christian, probably drew inspiration from the Bible and read "God" with a blank spacing from the Bible in the Chinese Union Version. From then on, he began to practice adding blank spacing.

Chiang gave instructions that Chiang's title must be left a space before it to show respect.

Chiang is also nicknamed "adding blank spacing".

Later, it became a common practice. In order to show respect even for common people, when writing about your superior and add a blank space in front of it to show respect.

It can be seen from this that it is not difficult for those in power to start new traditions. What started as a misunderstanding led to a new kind of rule.

It was not until 2015 that Taiwan officially abolished the writing style of "adding blank spacing".

This can only be said that good intentions may lead to a wrong conclusion.

But to this day, some Chinese Bibles online still retain the tradition of adding a space before the word "God" in the text.

Why do people keep this typographical practice in the Bible in this digital age?

When we look at the typography process over the last century, we can be sure that putting a space before the word "God" is not out of respect. If it is for reverence, then the name of God - "Jehovah" should also be treated in the same way, then there should be spaces before the words "God" and "Lord" and so on. The Bible would end up with a lot of blank spacings.

This is just an example, we need to have a clear mind, not be clouded by emotions, and not to follow traditions blindly.

3.1 第三个问题 The Third Issue

The third problem with Chinese Bible translation is the word "God".

When the Gospel reached China, one of the most well-known was Missionary Ricci, a Roman Catholic priest, who came to China at the end of the 16th century.

He has to deal not only with the tensions with the Chinese, but also with the tensions between the different sects.

Matteo Ricci was more tolerant, and believed that the problem of Chinese believers continuing to worship the heavens, ancestors, and Confucius in the traditional way is not to the level of worshipping idols. Matteo Ricci advocates calling the Creator "God" as "上帝" (Lord in heaven").

He believes that the traditional Chinese "天" and "上帝" are essentially the same as the "One True God" of the Catholics. The sacrifices to ancestors and Confucius, these are only ceremonies for remembrance of ancestors and Confucius, and have nothing to do with beliefs; as long as they do not incorporate ingredients such as making wishes, worship, and prayer, they do not violate Catholic doctrine in essence. Matteo Ricci's missionary strategies and methods have always been followed by the Jesuits who went to China to preach, and they are "Ricci Rules".

The Society of Jesus, to which Matteo Ricci belongs, believes that these Chinese ceremonies are secular rites that, within a certain range, should be tolerated by Christianity. However, the Dominicans and the Franciscans disagreed and reported the issue to the Vatican. The debate raged back and forth in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The debate raised three main points of contention:

  • The Chinese word for "God" should be determined to be "God", while opposing the Jesuits' willingness to allow Chinese Christians to use "天" or "God".
  • Christians are prohibited from participating in Confucian rituals.
  • It is forbidden for Christians to use name tablets nor to participate in Chinese ancestor worship ceremonies.

Then Clement XI banned the "Ricci Rule" in 1704. In 1742, Benedict XIV reaffirmed the prohibition and prohibited further debate.

In 1939, two centuries later, the Holy See reassessed the issue. Pius XII issued a new decree on December 8, 1939, basically allowing Chinese Catholics to worship ancestors and participate in Confucian rituals.

Protestant Church

For Protestant Christians, they don't accept what Catholics say. However, when the United Bible was printed, the mission groups could not reach a consensus, and as a result, the Bible was printed in two variants: a "神" version, and a "上帝" version.

Back then, printing was done through typography. The simplest solution is to add a space before the single word "神", replacing the two-character "上帝". This saves a lot of work instead of resetting all the types.

But for the new generation who grew up in the age of photocopiers and computers, they can only think that the space before the word "God" must be a way of showing respect for God.

I even saw some articles with spacing added superfluously in matters relating to "God".  This is tradition in-the-making due to ignorance. How easy is it to build traditions in the thin air.
