We should learn how to read the Bible.
We should keep a few things in mind:
- The bible was written a long time ago
- The Old Testament was written to the Jews in Hebrew
- The New Testament was written during the golden age of the Roman Empire.
- Needless to say, both Ancient Hebrew and Greek are related to, but not the same as, Modern Hebrew and Greek.
- They all had their own grammatical rules, and they were all real languages at the time, used on a daily basis by real normal people.
Since most of us cannot read the Bible in ancient Hebrew or ancient Greek, we need to rely on translators, our native language, and/or our second language to understand the biblical message.
Just reading the Bible may not be enough to understand it properly because we may be reading the Bible in a modern way of thinking. Always remember that the Bible was written in ancient times with a specific biblical worldview, which may be a very foreign culture to most of us city dwellers.
There are also 2,000 years of church history and traditions. Our beliefs are not pulled from thin air. For two thousand years, most of our teachings and teachings have been "handed down," from one generation to the next. There is a continuation of succession.
In ancient times, most people had no formal education. They couldspeak and converse with each other, but few could read and even fewer could write. Books (or ancient scrolls) were frighteningly expensive, beyond the reach of the average person. The ancients communicated orally, and even formal rabbinic education was basically by word of mouth.
In our modern age, everyone is educated, we can read and write. Most of us have more than ten years of education, and some even have nearly 20 years of higher education. We all have highly analytical minds.
Printed books are common, and now with the advancement of IT technology, e-books and internet resources can be accessed 24-7 at a very low cost.
We are experiencing an explosion of information with so much material that we cannot finish reading them in 10 lifetimes. We need tools to help us choose how to proceed with prioritizing reading.
In order to read the Bible, we cannot just read the Bible alone.
We actually have a lot of tools at our disposal.
Through smartphones, computers, and the Internet, we have easy access to vast amounts of information.
The question is: where should we begin?
